Premature infant are born with immature body functions and incomplete development of central nervous system. Those newborns need special care in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit where the environment is totally different from their mother’s womb. Excessive stimulation from environment of NICU e.g. sound from medical equipments, 24 hours switched on light, touching and holding the infants for medical and nursing care would affect the infants’ growth and development. This article aims to propose appropriate nursing care practices in developmental care for preterm infants in accordance with the concept of the National Association of Neonatal Nurses as well as literature reviewed. The framework consists of five core measures, which are: 1) protected sleep support, 2) pain and stress assessment and management, 3) developmental activities of daily living, 4) family-centered care, and 5) the healing environment. Neonatal nurses can be used in order to support growth and appropriate development of preterm infants.
